This morning I logged my final 10 trail miles of 2012 at the Resolution Run at Red Mountain Park.
Zack and I ran last year’s inaugural Resolution Run with our friend Jennifer when Red Mountain Park was not yet officially open. The run was a great way to get a sneak peek at Birmingham’s new green space, and I loved seeing how much it has grown in only a year! Jennifer was out there again today with some fellow See Jane Write friends, and she waited out in the cold after running her 3 mile loop for me to finish. This is the same girl who waited in 20 degree weather for me to finish the Mercedes Marathon last year – major friend points x 2!
The course was a nice 5 mile loop that went in the opposite direction of the trail race I ran in October, so it was nice to see the trail from a different perspective. We all took a wrong turn on the first loop and accidentally cut 2 miles off the course, causing us to add on two easy miles of flat jeep track at the end—cheating!
I felt great the entire time, which is encouraging. I assumed that my legs would be tired and cranky after running a 6 and a 19 this weekend, but they felt strong and fresh. I stuck to my plan and walked the uphills and ran the downhills hard. Because it wasn’t a timed race, I also took a few detours and stopped for photo ops.
It’s wonderful that that the Trak Shak, Birmingham Track Club, and Red Mountain Park hold the Resolution Run because it encourages walkers, runners, and wannabe trail runners like me to come out and experience a different side of Birmingham. I hear that 2013 will be big for Red Mountain Park and all of Birmingham’s green spaces, and I can’t wait to see what the next year brings!
